He needs Hana, but he is a good man at heart, so he wouldn't be glad that Yamaka died. Although I do not think he is happy once he dies, he does care because he goes over to the church once Hana tells him of his sickness.

The situation was something that deeply affected Taro. Over time, Taro soon started trusting Hana and forgiving her. I do not think that he was glad that Yamaka died. Yamaka was a very good friend to Taro and they had been firends for years.
