Hana Omiya- She is a 21 year old who lives with her family in Japan in Oka Village before she moves to the U.S. She is thin and small(one of the main characters). She has dark eyes, black hair and is a yound lady who is strong willed, educated and bright.She wanted to escape the smothering strictures of life in her village so she decides to take he uncles advice on going to the U.S to be the wife of a man named Taro Takeda.
Taro Takeda- 31 year old who lives in the U.S. He owns his own little shop in Oakland, Claifornia. He is conscientious, and hardworking. Hana explains him as a not so handsome man, with ind eyes, a thick nose and heavy lips, large ears which was a sign of good fortune, and who is also going bald. When she sees him for the first time she is not very pleases. He is christian and goes to church every sunday.
Kiyoshi Yamaka- Tall, lanky man with lots of wavy black hair. Hana thinks he is far better looking than Taro. He is very talkative and full spirited, makes Hana laugh and is able to make her feel comfortable. This leads to flirting at attachment. Hana and Yamaka are into eachother from the start. They show it in front of everyone at New Years dinner. Taro knows but says nothing.
