It was a cold wintery mornig when Hana wakes up to an empty bed. Mary had left with none of her belongings. She leaves a note saying that sheand Joe ran off to get married and live a life together. She becomes preanant after 2 months of their marriage, Hana offers to help out but Mary has already mad arangements.
It is the Year 1941 Hana and Taro came home on a Sunday afternoon after church and hears awful confusing news. America and Japan are at war, Jpanese planes have bombed Peral Harbour. There lives were full of rumors that all Japanese would be forced in to government camps.
Taro sells his shop to a white man and rejected Mary's offer of staying with her nd Joe in Salt Lake City. Hana and Taro would rather be ith their friends. In chapter 26 it then goes back to Kiku and Henry and how they are all getting ready for their departure. Henry wishes that his sons stayed in school. Al though they are American Citizens they are still being forced with their parents.
Henry hears something outside, he goes outside and sees a shadow, flashes his light and sees a man wth a gun in his hand, Henry gets shot and dies.
Taro, Hana and many other Japanese Americans begin their trip. They arrive at a horse track and are assigned barrack sixteen.
