Chapters 8-14 (Amanda Perkins)

In this section of Picture Bride, Hana deals with several struggles in her life. These struggle are the death of Yamika and her child to a influenza epedimic. Also, her friend Kiku leaves because her husband lost work in the city. Then Hana and her family are dealing with the problem of having very little money. She has to regain the money that was lost from the superintendent of her church and also the work of Taro's business. The struggles that Hana deals with are some that many people deal with today. Many people deal with the death of family or friend that die from a severe illness. When Hana lost her child, it represented many of the women of today that also lost their child. Hana deals with the depression of the death, which occurs with most women who deal with struggle alike these. Then the problem of making sure there is enough money to support yourself and a family is an issue that many have to endure. Hana is a character that can connect with almost any person because she has many issues that are still occuring today.
